Privacy Policy
Effective October 15, 2026
MinneSlate ("MinneSlate", "we", "us") runs the MinneSlate website at minneslate.com, its web app, and the MinneSlate apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android and Windows (together, the "Service"). This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. Questions or requests: hello@minneslate.com.
Information you give us
- Account information. Your email address and password when you sign up. We store your password only as a one-way hash. If you sign in with Microsoft, we receive your name, email address and the basic profile details Microsoft shares with the sign-in, and we keep them with your account.
- Phone number. You can add a phone number to your account. It's optional. We don't currently send text messages, and we don't use your phone number for marketing.
- What you track and save. Your tracks (names, descriptions, priorities and the bills in them), saved searches, notification settings, the organizations and accounts you belong to, and who you share tracks with.
- Searches. The words you search for, linked to your account when you're signed in.
- Feedback. Anything you send us through the feedback form, with the page you sent it from.
Information we collect automatically
- Usage information. When you use the website, we record your visits and the pages and actions you use: IP address, browser, device type, operating system, the page that referred you, and campaign tags in links. We also record when you sign in and the IP address you signed in from.
- Cookies. We use cookies to keep you signed in, to remember you if you choose "Remember me" (for two weeks), and to measure how the website is used (see Analytics below). We don't use advertising cookies.
- Analytics. The website uses Google Analytics to understand how people use it. Google Analytics sets its own cookies and receives information about your visit, including your IP address. You can opt out with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
- Error reports. When something goes wrong, we record technical details of the error, which may include your account's ID and email address, so we can fix it.
The website doesn't respond to "Do Not Track" browser signals.
The apps
The apps use the same account and the same Service, so this policy covers them too. The apps don't collect your location, contacts, photos or advertising identifiers, and they don't include third-party analytics or advertising code. The Android app asks only for permission to use the internet. The apps store your sign-in tokens securely on your device so you stay signed in.
How we use information
- To provide the Service: your account, tracks, searches, sharing and notifications.
- To send you email you've asked for, such as bill alerts and daily digests, and messages about your account, such as confirming your email address or resetting your password.
- To keep the Service secure, prevent abuse and fix problems.
- To understand how the Service is used and improve it.
- To comply with the law.
We don't sell your personal information, and we don't use it for targeted advertising.
AI features
Some features use AI services from OpenAI:
- Search. To find bills that match the meaning of your search, we send the words you search for (and the text of your saved searches) to OpenAI to turn them into a numeric representation.
- Track Builder. When you use Track Builder, the topic you choose and the names and descriptions of your existing tracks are sent to OpenAI so it can suggest bills and avoid duplicating your tracks.
We send OpenAI only what the feature needs, not your email address or other account details. Under OpenAI's terms for its API, it doesn't use this information to train its models. Bill summaries and other AI-generated content about legislation are made from public legislative records, not from your information.
Who we share information with
We share information only as described here:
- People you share with. When you share a track, the people you share it with can see your email address and the bills you've added. Members of an organization account can see each other's email addresses. Track notification emails show who added a bill.
- Service providers that run parts of the Service for us, under agreements that limit how they
can use it:
- hosting and storage in the United States, including Amazon Web Services for files and backups;
- SendGrid (Twilio) to deliver email;
- Google Analytics for website analytics;
- OpenAI for the AI features described above;
- Honeybadger and Skylight for error reports and performance monitoring;
- Microsoft, if you choose to sign in with Microsoft;
- Google Fonts and jsDelivr, which serve fonts and icons to your browser when you load the website.
- Legal reasons. When the law requires it, or to protect the rights, safety or property of our users, the public or MinneSlate.
- Business transfers. If MinneSlate is involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of it, and this policy will continue to apply to it.
Public legislative information
The Service publishes public records about the Minnesota Legislature: bills and their text and history, votes, committee hearings and recordings, and information about legislators and their staff from official public sources. If you believe something we publish about you is inaccurate, let us know.
How long we keep information
We keep your account information, tracks and saved searches while your account is open. We keep usage records, search history and error reports for as long as we reasonably need them for the purposes above. When you delete your account, we delete or de-identify your personal information, except where we need to keep it to meet legal obligations, resolve disputes or prevent abuse. Copies in our backups are deleted as the backups expire, within 30 days.
Your choices and rights
- Notifications. You can change or turn off bill alerts and digests at any time in your account settings or for each track.
- Access and correction. You can see and update your email address, password and phone number in your account settings. To get a copy of your information, email us.
- Deletion. To delete your account and its information, email hello@minneslate.com from the address on your account.
- Cookies. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you block them, you won't be able to stay signed in.
Depending on where you live, you may have other rights under the law, such as the right to know what information we have about you, to correct it, to delete it or to opt out of certain uses. We offer these to all users. Email us to make a request, and we'll respond within 45 days. We won't treat you differently for making one.
Security
We protect information with encryption in transit (HTTPS), hashed passwords, limits on sign-in attempts and restricted access to our systems. No service can guarantee complete security, so please use a strong password and keep it to yourself.
Children
MinneSlate is made for professionals and adults following the Legislature. It isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us information, email us and we'll delete it.
Where information is stored
MinneSlate is based in the United States, and we store and process information in the United States.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. When we do, we'll change the effective date at the top, and if a change is significant, we'll let you know by email or in the Service before it takes effect.
